Plant Genomics to curb hunger without damaging environment !!!
Ever expanding human population incurs an unending pressure on
environment and food availability which leads to hunger if not resolved.
These twin problems , according to scientist communities can be taken
care of by the use of “PLANT GENOMICS” technology which is a used to
originate new variety of crops by doing genetically modification having extraordinary capacity of high yielding without harming environment.
population of planet would be around 9 billion till 2050 which will create unprecedented pressure over food security and environment. In 1960s and 70s, there was widespread hunger due to less or no food availability was prevalent in many parts of the world which needed immediate and concrete actions to be taken..A biotechnological revolution happened in 60s and 70s resolved the problems of hunger up to an extent and a large population came out of prevalent hunger. Challenge had been taken by scientific class and high yielding varieties were generated by mixing and mutation of two different varieties of crops which were less prone to diseases and can stand harsh climatic pressures too. But this revolutionary phase has been fully exploited by agriculture class .Because of population explosion and land availability issues, unprecedented pressure of environment degradation is widespread. we need to find new ways to curb the twin problem of hunger and environment degradation.
According to scientific class, a very effective and lasting solution of these problems is “PLANT GENOMICS“. Plant Genomics is a technology where genes of parent plant and wild plant are intermixed and a new variety is generated which has both the properties of parent plant and wild plant. After many field trials, it has been found that new genetically modified varieties has tremendous capacity to yield many times higher than previous one. In addition, these modified crops are less prone to diseases and pest attacks. These new varieties can be grown on soil, deficient in nutrients with less fertilizer’s application. Field trials have proved that the application of these genetically modified crops also maintains the desired level of nutrients too.
While some concerns have been raised by environmentalists about their ill effects on environment which are under consideration. Food availability to such a large population to curb hunger, providing nutritional food without damaging the environment is a Himalayan challenge before scientific classes. Concerns of environmentalists can’t be ignored and further new developments are still needed to done.
